Plant daylilies for the carefree garden

Daylily

An established daylily patch is pretty much carefree. It is this quality that makes the daylily such a wonderful naturalizing flower.  They are often planted in or around difficult places to mow; a group of daylilies will use their thick foliage to smother out most grasses and weeds. They are easy to plant and will grow in most types of soil.

How-To Plant A Daylily:

Tip: If necessary, soak roots in water to help them move more freely when planting.

• Dig a shallow hole 2 or 3 inches deep, extending a couple inches past the reach of the roots.
• Replace some loosened dirt back into the hole, creating a slight mound in the center.

Careful not to damage the roots:
• Spread the roots outward over the mound reaching in different directions.
Placing the crown in the center of the mound.
• Finish filling in the hole, covering the roots.
• Ligthtly press down the dirt with your hand.
• Water weekly until roots are established. Some species may need to be watered during droughts.
• Plant 8 to 12 inches apart.

Tip:  Always follow the directions that come with the plant, as they may vary from one plant species to another.

To Transplant Daylilies:

• Dig up clumps.
• Divide clumps, leaving as much soil attached to roots if possible.
• Replant smaller clumps.
• Water thoroughly.

Daylilies attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
